Assistant Chief Deputy Clint Greenwood served his community as a Texas peace officer and attorney for more than thirty years.
Assistant Chief Deputy Clint Greenwood was born in Houston, attended Rice University for undergraduate studies, and South Texas College of Law for his Juris Doctor. Chief Greenwood was also a graduate of both the Senior Management Institute for Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Academy, Session 263.
Chief Greenwood started his private law practice in 1989, where the focus of his work was defending police officers in criminal matters. Shortly thereafter, Chief Greenwood joined the Harris County District Attorney's Office. During his time at the Harris County D.A.'s Office, Greenwood would come to serve as Division Chief of the Police Integrity Division. In that capacity, Chief Greenwood supervised the investigations of all officer-involved shootings, allegations of excessive force and general misconduct by police officers occurring in Harris County.
In 2015, Chief Greenwood joined Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman's administration as a Major, overseeing the Office of Inspector General, Internal Affairs Division, Legal Services and General Investigations. On January 1, 2017, Greenwood was named Assistant Chief Deputy with the Harris County Precinct Three Constable's Office. He served only three months in this capacity.
On April 3, 2017, an individual ambushed Chief Greenwood just before 7:00 AM, as the Chief reported to duty at the Baytown Courthouse. Chief Greenwood succumbed to a gunshot wound while on his way to the hospital. Investigation into the shooting ultimately determined the murderer to be a Baytown resident who held a multi-year vendetta against the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The individual believed Chief Greenwood and the Department were responsible for the murderer being named in a police report during a domestic dispute. The episode ultimately led to the assailant's wife divorcing him, and he seems to have considered Chief Greenwood and the Harris County Sheriff's Office responsible.
The murderer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound less than 24 hours after Chief Greenwood's assassination.
Chief Greenwood also gave back to the law enforcement community as an instructor, having taught at the Houston Police Academy, Harris County Sheriff's Office Academy, Texas Department of Public Safety Academy and numerous other agencies throughout the United States. Additionally, during Chief Greenwood's more than 30-year career, he represented police officers as a contract attorney with the Houston Police Officer's Association, Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, and the Houston Police Officer's Union.
Chief Greenwood is survived by his wife and two grown children, one of whom followed Clint's footsteps in law enforcement. He's further survived by all those who wear the badge, and those who seek to see his values and his legacy continued-- including the members of this Foundation.
